Description
As a part of a diverse community of faculty and staff who represent many faith systems and worldviews, Marian University seeks qualified applicants to promote our Catholic Franciscan mission and identity through a tenure-track appointment as Assistant Professor of Philosophy. Area of specialization is ethics. The ability to teach courses in various areas of applied ethics is especially desirable, e.g., courses in the ethics of capitalism and markets, bioethics, and engineering ethics. The department is also interested in candidates to coach our Ethics Bowl team.
Area of concentration is open, though the ability to teach courses in at least one of the following areas will be given special consideration: philosophy of law, philosophy of mind, philosophy of science, modern and contemporary philosophy, and political philosophy.
Candidates should be able to teach the richness of the Catholic tradition while also attending to the broad and ecumenical needs of general education, supporting interdisciplinary initiatives, and working with the students and faculty of Bishop Simon Bruté College Seminary. The position will report to the Chair of the Department of Philosophy, operating on a 9-month, full-time appointment, with a course load of twelve credits per semester.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
-Actively engages the Catholic Franciscan mission and identity of Marian University by modeling our Franciscan Sponsorship Values and honoring the legacy of the founding congregation through transformative education, unity in diversity, leadership through service, integrating faith and life, and institutional policies.
-Teaches up to 24 credits per academic year. Multiple sections of general education service in Philosophy of Human Nature and Person as well as courses in ethics (and other areas of competence, if/when needed).
-Shares in the ongoing development and implementation of department and college activities and projects.
-Actively participates in curriculum implementation and activities of the Department of Philosophy.
-Engages in scholarship and other professional development activities.
-Mentors’ students through advising, internships, and service-learning opportunities in the community.
-Coaches the Marian University Ethics Bowl team
-Participates in the life of the campus and university service, including participation in faculty governance and co-curricular programs
-Other duties as assigned
Required Qualifications:
-Knowledge of and commitment to the mission of Marian University
-An earned doctorate (Ph.D.) in Philosophy; exceptional A. B. D. candidates may be considered if (1) they have a date set for their Ph. D. defense, (2) have an M. A. in hand, and (3) have teaching experience.
-Experience working with students at various levels of abilities
-Evidence of teaching excellence in higher education
-Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
