Various Teaching Positions

Catholic Theological Institute

Full-Time • Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea

Come and teach in Papua New Guinea!

The Catholic Theological Institute is a small, college-level community in the South Pacific, providing intellectual formation for Catholic seminarians from 19 dioceses across Papua New Guinea (PNG), as well as several Catholic religious congregations and a small number of lay students.

Help prepare indigenous future priests, bishops, and lay leaders by bringing to bear all your gifts and educational background, with flexibility and cooperation as touchstones.

Why Here?

• Immediate and visible impact – with freedom of thought and teaching compared to the current US
• Teach across the philosophy and theology curriculum – wherever your willingness meets our students’ need
• Invest as you have been invested in – on behalf of those without much access to strong educational institutions
• Serve indigenous leaders – help local priests and lay theologians and philosophers develop their minds

Available Positions

Start Date: Late May 2026:

• 1 or 2 teaching positions in Philosophy
Ability to teach ESL, Anthropology, Psychology, Latin, or Catholic theology a plus. 1- or 3-year renewable contracts. Master’s degree or above required.
• 1 position in Canon Law (may be renewable)

Start Date: August ‘26 and Beyond:

• Academic Dean (3-year renewable contract, minimal teaching, maximal administrating)
• Positions in Holy Scripture and Moral Theology may be available (Licentiate preferred)

Benefits

• Housing, health insurance, and use of shared vehicles and outdoor athletic facilities
• Quick access to the capital city, beaches, a local river, and lush mountains
• A strong sense of co-laboring with colleagues and being uniquely useful
• Paid travel to and from Papua New Guinea (beginning and end of the contract)

What does the ‘Land of the Unexpected’ require?

• Committed Christian faith – Catholicism preferred but not required
• Missionary mindset – flexibility, high tolerance of uncertainty, physical fitness, and willingness to take up new tasks while learning on the job
• Creativity, stamina, and good humor – power and indoor plumbing are often interrupted. It feels a bit like teaching while camping in a comfortable setting. But you will never be cold!
